Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are welcome in all service and program departments including Refugee Resettlement, English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction, After-School programming and Employment services. Other opportunities include translation (Arabic, Burmese, and Nepali dialects), grant writing, fundraising, donations organizing and special event coordination. We also offer a variety of internships throughout the year for college students seeking school credit or anyone else looking for rewarding experience with a non-profit organization.

Refugee Resettlement:

Imagine being uprooted from your home, having to start a new life and settle into a new and unfamiliar country. This is what our clients face and we try to make that process easier every step of the way through our Resettlement and Placement program. Volunteers can be involved in a variety of ways including: apartment set-up, airport pick-ups, accompanying clients to various appointments, office duties and more.

Family Partners Program

Help newly arrived refugees transition successfully to their new lives in Chicago by becoming a volunteer with our Family Partners Program. Volunteers in this program play a key role in bettering the lives of refugees as they introduce families to Chicago, the English language, and American culture. Over the course of three months, volunteers will get to know their partnered refugee family during weekly and rewarding home visits.

ESL Classes:

ECAC provides basic and vocational English language education to new refugees and immigrants. Beginning and intermediate level classes are offered year-round Monday through Thursday morning (9:00am-11:00am). Volunteer teaching assistants are needed to provide individualized help to the students in our large classes.

After-School Program:

The After-School Program runs Monday through Thursday from 3:00pm– 5:00pm. Activities include homework help/tutoring, reading, sports, games and arts and crafts. Periodically, guest speakers are invited to educate and run programs for the children. Help is always welcome, as are new ideas and initiatives!

Employment Services:

Employment services focus on assisting refugees and immigrants to develop the skills necessary to join the workforce at large and gain economic independence. The program includes assessment, job readiness training, counseling, referrals and placement. Volunteers have helped our clients fill out job applications and create resumes, conducted mock interviews, searched for new job opportunities and helped our job developers by assisting with various office duties.
